La Palma

Cloud forest
1.995 m of altitude
100 families

About this local community

La Palma is located 30 km from Salinas de Guaranda and is the first community in the cloud forest at an altitude of 1,995 meters above sea level. The winter is characterized by fog and rain that give a magical and melancholic air to this community, but in the summer, it is sunny and you can enjoy spectacular sunsets from Palma Loma, which give the extraordinary feeling of being above the clouds. Its location enables you to discover incredible biodiversity in the midst of majestic mountain landscapes.
Founded in 1974 it was the first community established of the parish within the subtropical area. The name comes from the many palm trees growing in the area.

It is the most developed community from an economic and social point of view. One hundred families live there and it has a school and a weekly market making the atmosphere fun and vibrant: people are welcoming and curious.

If in the past its inhabitants took advantage of the palm trees for the construction of ceilings, walls, and floors, now they are mainly dedicated to agricultural tasks: milk production, farms with small animals, orchards farms and commerce in the local fair.

Did you know...

The community of La Palma was, in 2017, the first community of the parish in which the local board of representatives was entirely female.
