Matiaví

Cloud forest
1.465 m of altitude
45 families

About this local community

The community of Matiaví Bajo is located 40 km from Salinas de Guaranda at an altitude of 1,475 meters above sea level. It is in the climatic zone of the cloud forest: the fog, a constant presence, gives an air of mysterious fascination that ends every morning when waking up with a warm and reassuring sun.

Human settlements came to this land in 1950 and now live around 150 people; the school has 25 students. Thanks to the climate and good energy the flora and fauna are extraordinary: blue butterflies, unique flowers, native trees and much more. The inhabitants dedicate themselves to the life of the countryside, most of them have a farm far from the town centre and return to the community only at night, however, this is a very united and well-organized community.

The women carry out various activities from tourists, taking care of the community house and organizing the tasks, through the community garden where they dedicate themselves to medicinal plants, to the milling of sugar cane producing exquisite organic panela. The people of this community possess spiritual and physical strength that they transmit to others through their daily gestures.
