About this local community
San Clemente is an indigenous Kichwa community of the Karanki identity and is located 7km south of Ibarra at 2800 masl in the cloud forest. Since the 1990s, after decades of fighting for their rights, the community is officially recognized.
San Clemente is a small natural paradise: you can find all sorts of medical plants, birds, flowers and trees. The families which are living in this beautiful place are principally engaged in organic agriculture, the women however also earn a living by creating spectacular embroideries.
The touristic activity has started around 17 years ago and is focussed on homestays in which the families show you their indigenous culture and its multiple secrets around medical plants.
