Yunguilla

Cloud forest
2.500 m of altitude
56 families

About this local community

Yunguilla is located in the parish of Calicalí, one-hour north-west of Quito. It is situated at an altitude of 2650 masl, in the midst of Mountains forming the last frontier of the typical cloud forest found around Quito. This type of forest can be characterized by its large concentration of fog just above the surface, specifically in winter. Nevertheless, in summer the bright sun brings beautiful sunsets in the evenings.

Since more than 20 years, the 56 families which live in Yunguilla have dedicated themselves to protect their natural resources and to the establishment of communitarian tourism. Both activities have significantly improved their living standards.

Nature is the main characteristic of this beautiful place, which is home to 75 species of orchids, more than 70 species of birds and 25 different species of trees.

Did you know...

The first people to believe in tourism as a source of income 25 years ago were named the 18 locos (crazy people) because no one thought that their community would attract many tourists. In the end, the "crazy people" made it into the newspapers because they developed the first communitarian tourism in the zone of Yunguilla. They are known at the national level, until today, for their good work in establishing one of the first sites of communitarian tourism.
